Salman Rushdie

Once again, intolerance from the easily offended brigade has reared its ugly head. British author Salman Rushdie was stabbed several times while giving a lecture at a university in upstate New York. Fortunately, he survived the attack but it is on a ventilator and unable to speak. Plus, it’s looking likely that he is going to lose his left eye. The attacker was quickly overpowered and has been arrested.

While no official motive has been established for the attack on Rushdie, many believe that it was on account of his book, “The Satanic Verses,” which he wrote in the late 1980s. The Islamic community throughout the world announced their opposition to the book and even then leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini declared a fatwa on Rushdie, offering $3million for anyone who killed him, forcing Salman Rushdie to go into hiding.

Ten years later, Salman thought it was safe to come out of hiding and for over two decades it seemed to be the case. Unfortunately, there are those in the world who won’t not only forgive and forget but pass their hatred and intolerance down to the next generation. Salman’s attacker was 24, roughly born the same year “The Satanic Verses” came out. We now see the result of what hate passed down can achieve.

Right now, I feel the need to declare that I would be just as critical if Rushdie had been stabbed by an American Fundamentalist Christian. No one religion has a monopoly on intolerance. There is no room in this world for it! Especially over a book which was written two and a half decades ago. My answer to things like this is that if it offends you, have noting to do with it. By all means, voice your opposition but the one thing you can’t do is try to injure or take the life of someone who disagrees with you. I hope that Salman makes a full recovery.
